Total Music Source started as an online distributor in Chris’ father Fred’s Cape garage in 2001. Fred kept inviting Chris and Kim to move from Rochester, New York, but they held back until in 2013 when Fred was diagnosed with colon cancer. With no music experience between them (Kim worked in internet marketing while Chris was involved in the automotive industry), they moved to Cape Town and inherited the business. Three years later, Chris felt they needed to expand into retail. In 2018, Total Music Source moved to larger quarters which also include ukuleles, banjos, mandolins, violins, keyboards, percussion, DJ gear, accessories and more for online sales and on the spot.

“Internet sales are still our daily bread, but we also love the interaction with customers,” Kim said.

Total Music Source also hosts guitar workshops and clinics by guitar maker representatives and special performances by national artists, including Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss and Eric Peterson of the band Testament. Classes are offered and some equipment can be rented.

In-store equipment maintenance and repairs are also handled by local guitarist George Mosher, who has joined the chorus of accolades for the Fender brand.

“They honor their past but also continue to innovate for the future,” he said.
