The sound of James Burton’s Fender Telecaster guitar has graced countless recordings by Elvis Presley, The Monkees and Elvis Costello. The Fender Stratocaster was the instrument of choice for Buddy Holly, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix, who was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the greatest guitarist of all time in 2015.
These types of guitars from the ever-popular manufacturer, along with its precision bass, amplifiers and accessories have recently been added to Total Music Source’s equipment offerings in Cape Coral.
“We’ve been trying for years to get them,” said Chris Hussong, co-owner with his wife Kim. “There has been huge anticipation from our customers.”
Offering the mystique and cachet of the classic American brand – launched in 1950 by Leo Fender in Fullerton, California, and deemed “iconic” and “transformative in sound and vision” in the 2016 book “Play It Loud” on the history of the electric guitar – is the latest major development for the company. They added the popular Breedlove acoustic guitars last summer to their guitar inventory which also includes Martin, Schechter, Ibanez, D’Angelico, Yamaha, ESP and Takamine.
Some of the innovations that made the Telecaster unique included the removal of part of its body to provide unprecedented ease of access to the highest notes on the fingerboard and Stratocaster pioneered the contour on the back of the body so it can fit more comfortably against the player’s rib cage. . The number and capabilities of the pickups on both brands’ bodies have led to greater tonal possibilities.
Longtime store customer Mike Beaber, a member of the band Timeline who plays throughout our area, recently discovered a “Strat”.
“It’s got action and a feel of its own,” the Cape Coral resident said, also citing its “unique sound and playability.”
Total Music Source started as an online distributor in Chris’ father Fred’s Cape garage in 2001. Fred kept inviting Chris and Kim to move from Rochester, New York, but they held back until in 2013 when Fred was diagnosed with colon cancer. With no music experience between them (Kim worked in internet marketing while Chris was involved in the automotive industry), they moved to Cape Town and inherited the business. Three years later, Chris felt they needed to expand into retail. In 2018, Total Music Source moved to larger quarters which also include ukuleles, banjos, mandolins, violins, keyboards, percussion, DJ gear, accessories and more for online sales and on the spot.
“Internet sales are still our daily bread, but we also love the interaction with customers,” Kim said.
Total Music Source also hosts guitar workshops and clinics by guitar maker representatives and special performances by national artists, including Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss and Eric Peterson of the band Testament. Classes are offered and some equipment can be rented.
In-store equipment maintenance and repairs are also handled by local guitarist George Mosher, who has joined the chorus of accolades for the Fender brand.
“They honor their past but also continue to innovate for the future,” he said.
